Is there anyway to update an out of warranty motorola phone?

Is there anyway to update an out of warranty Motorola phone - I've had to start using my old one as my new one has broken ? I've been online and as my old phone is a couple of years old it won't update. Any help please ?|||connect it to a pc and look for a "motorola suite" if i can say that. then use it to update your phone's S/w
